First Dance: All I Want Is You by Tristan Prettyman

B and L Cake1

Bianca and Lycean are two busy ER docs in the midst of their residency, so when they asked us to play for their wedding on a Thursday night we were more than happy to accommodate them. Their schedules keep them occupied all weekend long, but hey – we’ll rock out any day of the week, any time of day! The couple chose a band/DJ combo package to suit their very eclectic taste, which is something we’ve been doing a lot more of lately. It’s a lot of fun for us, we get to dance too. We even learned some new moves!

Bianca and Lyncean chose Tristan Prettyman’s version of the Barry Louis Polisar song, All I Want Is You (the song that was made popular by the movie Juno). It’s a song that is as sweet as the couple themselves.

The room was decked out in origami details from the center pieces to the cake decor. A really nice touch that someone must have spent hours on.

First Dance: You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne

We were recommended to Tina and Dave by the good folks at The 21 Club. They do some smaller weddings there and they were impressed with the way we maintain the ability to play a wide variety of music with a smaller ensemble.

Tina and Dave wanted just that in the music they chose for their wedding. We put together arrangements of all of their favorite songs with a four piece band that not only fit into the smaller space but didn’t overwhelm their guests with volume. We had a lot of fun with it and the guests not only got to talk and enjoy the beautiful setting and amazing food at 21, but they still got to dance and cut loose as if we were a full sized orchestra.

For Tina and Dave’s wedding they had a short ceremony to start the evening for which we played Moon River, a favorite of both the bride and the groom. They requested You Are The Best Thing by Ray LaMontagne for their first dance. We love playing this one; it’s been very popular. It’s a great heartfelt song that’s also danceable – it makes everyone want to move!

Here’s some details…

First Dance: Little Trip to Heaven by Tom Waits

Post-Toast Dedication Song: Forever Young by Bob Dylan

Heather and Dylan had amazing, warm and beautifully sunny early-fall weather for their wedding day. Their ceremony took place outdoors on the hilltop overlooking the Hudson River and the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. The view was stunning, The Garrison is truly a lovely place for a wedding at any time of year, but there was something about this particular early October day that was just perfect.

Musically, Heather and Dylan were a lot of fun to work with. They are huge fans of classic rock, The Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan and The Beatles just to name a few. Their ceremony featured solo piano versions of In My Life and All You Need is Love, and their cocktail hour played out to a background of stripped down classic rock tunes.

Dylan is a gemologist, so the cocktail hour room was accented by a wall of decorative crystals that were interspersed with the guests’ seating assignments and lyrics from some of Heather and Dylan’s favorite love songs.

Their first dance was Little Trip to Heaven by Tom Waits, which we had (coincidentally) done for Eissa and Nick’s wedding a month earlier. It’s a great choice for a first dance, a heavily jazz-influenced early track from Mr. Waits first album Closing Time. Overall Heather and Dylan had some great special requests, including a guest appearance by a friend of theirs singing the song They Love Each Other by The Grateful Dead.

Dylan’s dad however, made a request of us that turned out to be one of the coolest reception moments I can remember. He made a speech about the couple that was heartfelt and warm. Afterwards, he asked that we play Forever Young by Bob Dylan – a favorite song of theirs. He had lyric sheets hidden under each guest’s plate so that they could join in and sing along. At first, people were tentative to join Yves on vocals, but by the second chorus everyone was moved to sing and the whole room was filled with voices. It was such a great moment. I was able to take some video that you can check out on our YouTube channel by clicking here.

Heather and Dylan were a joy to work with and they were as gracious and welcoming as the lovely setting they chose for their big day. We had a great time playing for them (and of course rocking out to Grateful Dead tunes later in the night). We wish them all the best in everything life has to offer. Until we meet again…
